Description This ca. 1890s-1910 Mittenwald 3/4 flatback bass has an especially fine tone for a factory instrument. The spruce top features very even fine grain with bold winter grain lines. The maple back and ribs are of even density and a lighter build weight than the orly 20th century basses that are more commonly seen. The beech neck is fit with individual tuning machines and a nice dense ebony fingerboard. The bridge has been fit with large aluminum adjusters that turn easily. The tailpiece is an ebony Hill style with braided steel tailwire. The adjustable graphite endpin is from New Harmony. There are nicely carved wooden bumpers attached to the G side upper and lower bout. Currently strung with Pirastro Flexocore Deluxe. Dimensions are: Top length 42 3/8″, Upper bout width 19 7/8″, Middle bout width 14″, Lower bout width 25 3/4″, Rib depth at tail 7 3/4″, Rib depth at upper bout crease 7 1/2″, Rib depth at neck joint 5 3/4″, String length 42 1/8.
