Description This ca. 1890s blockless 3/4 flat back has been converted to having a neck block and undergone a neck rest by Hammond Ashley of Seattle. It is a robust instrument, which rewards with a solid presence down to the bottom E, in either jazz or orchestral play. The top plate has a moderately dense character with medium grain width. The back and ribs are made from featureless clear figure maple of moderate dimensions for strength of voice. The neck features tuning individual machines of moderate weight. The neck reset resulted in a final bridge height of 6 7/8″. The small number of repairs were professionally done. Though photographed with gut strings, the bass was recently restrung with Pirastro Perpetual strings. Dimensions are: Top length 43″, Upper bout width 20 1/2″, Middle bout width 1String length. 4″, Lower bout width 25 1/8″, Rib depth at tail 8″, Rib depth at upper bout crease 7 7/8″, Rib depth at neck 6 1/2″. String length 43 1/8″. This bass has a commanding voice in a vintage jazz setting. With cover.
