Description This ca. 1890s German 3/4 flatback bass hass been skillfully converted to a 5 string configuration with a wider fingerboard and an added tuning machine at the tailpiece. It has a rich and powerful voice and has been successfully used in a few local orchestras. Repairs to the back and ribs were professionally performed as part of the conversion process. The spruce top plate has a solid and mature quality, and remains in good repair. The maple ribs and back are of moderate density and give a very solid low end quality of voice. The tuning machines are single unit hatpeg type at the pegbox and a Schaller bass guitar tuning machine at the tailpiece. Dimensions are: Top length 41 3/4″, Upper bout width 19 3/4″, Middle bout width 14 1/4″, Lower bout width 25 1/4″, Rib depth at tail 7 1/2″, Rib depth at upper bout crease 7 1/4″, Rib depth at neck 6 1/8″, String length 41 5/8″, Bridge height 6 1/8″. This is a very fine 5 string instrument for orchestral and jazz use. With cover.
