Description This 1960s Vitali Imports 3/4 carved back bass has undergone some performance enhancements that have turned it into a very special and versatile jazz or orchestral instrument. The woods used in this bass are spectacular, with nice healthy cosmetics and design, and exceptionally high quality. The top plate features alpine spruce with med-fine grain width and exceptionall bold grain definition. There is even some hazelfichte (bearclaw figure), which is quite often an indicator of cross-grain strength, which can result in an extra colorful voice. The maple back plate and ribs feature a consistently bold flame figure throughout, with fine attention paid to the crisply cut violin corner outlines and facets. The varnish used is a clean golden namber with very subtle antiquing treatment. The tuning machines are well-maintained halfplate style, which turn very evenly and smoothly. The endpin is an adjustable 10 mm steel rod. Performance enhancements include: Top regraduation, bass bar remodeling, neck reset, tailpiece saddle extension, and a new fingerboard. Dimensions are: Top length 42 5/8″, Upper bpout width 19 3/8″, Middle bout width 14 3/4″, Lower bout width 25 1/2″, Rib depth at tail 8 1/8″, Rib depth at upper bout angle 7 5/8″, Rib depth at neck 6 3/8″, String length 41 3/8″, Bridge height 6 7/8″. The overall condition is nice and tidy with just one repaired top crack. This bass is a very fine performance instrument, versatile enough for jazz play or the orchestra pit. With padded cover.
