Description An IWC watch from the golden-age of the Company. Simplicity and understatement were the order of the day. This watch sums up both of those virtues. Item description: IWC (International Watch Company) 18k rose gold wristwatch with teardrop lugs. Champagne dial with rose gold hour battons, and Roman numerals on the quarters. Dial marked ‘International watch Company – Schaffhausen’. Manual wind. Movement with Geneva Stripes and fine regulation (engraved with International Watch Company name). Case-back stamped with IWC Probus designation, along with 18k – 0.750 gold designation and serial number. With a calf strap and non-IWC gold buckle. Case size: 45mm x 36mm Condition report: Case in excellent condition with a nice polished finish remaining (free from major scratches or other damage). Dial original and with a nice ‘soft’ age patination. Movement clean and in working condition (no warranty implied). The timepiece may have been opened, so it should not be used near moisture or water without being checked by a qualified watchmaker. Background to IWC: In 1868, an American engineer and watchmaker, Florentine Ariosto Jones (1841–1916), who had been a director of E. Howard & Co, America’s leading watchmaking company, founded the International Watch Company. His intention was to combine the craftsmanship of the Swiss with the modern engineering technology from the U.S. The overall plan being to manufacture high quality movements and watch parts for the American market. The company was to become the only manufacturers of watches in north-eastern Switzerland. The quality and robustness of the company’s movements, led them to recieve large contracts in World War II from both Germany and Britain.
